TEHRAN - IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano on Sunday attended a meeting of the Iranian parliament’s special committee which is studying the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

During the session, Amano promised that the Additional Protocol to the NPT would be implemented in Iran without any prejudice.

“The Agency [IAEA] respects classified issues as it regards them as serious. We have a regime for protecting classified information, to which we abide by, and one which we take seriously,” Amano told the session.

“I am glad to have had this opportunity to be with Iranian parliament representatives. The provided opportunity is very important to maintain interaction on the important nuclear issue as we need to hold negotiations with one another,” he added.

“Since taking the office at the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2009, my priority has always been resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomacy as I believe in such an approach,” he continued.

The Agency and Iran has always maintained close cooperation since the 1970s, he told the session, expressing hope that the two sides can make every effort to verify the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program.

On Sunday Amano also visited the Parchin military site, where some Western sources claim Iran used for secret nuclear weapons studies.

“As a gust of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Amano made a ceremonial visit to the Parchin,” Iran’s nuclear spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi told IRNA.
